Released in November 1996 on the Spice Girls’ debut album, Spice, “Who Do You Think You Are” is an upbeat dance-pop anthem inspired by the disco sounds of the late ’70s. Written by the five girls alongside songwriting and production duo Absolute, the track explores the glamorous world of fame and how the spotlight can sometimes go to someone’s head.
In February 1997, the Spice Girls opened the BRIT Awards with an unforgettable performance of the song. It was here that Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress stole the show, becoming one of the most memorable fashion moments of the ’90s and a symbol of Cool Britannia.
In March 1997, “Who Do You Think You Are” was released as a double A-side single with “Mama” in aid of Comic Relief. The accompanying music video introduced the hilarious Sugar Lumps, a satirical take on the Spice Girls, played by famous British comedians to help raise money for charity.
The single became the group’s fourth consecutive UK number-one hit, making the Spice Girls the first act in UK chart history to reach number one with their first four singles. It also achieved strong international success, reaching the top ten in several European countries and New Zealand.
With its infectious disco beat, powerful vocals and unforgettable BRIT Awards moment, “Who Do You Think You Are” remains a true Spice Girls classic — and a perfect celebration of the group’s larger-than-life Girl Power spirit.
