The story

Say You’ll Be There

Released on 26 September 1996, “Say You’ll Be There” was the second single from the Spice Girls’ debut album, Spice. Following the huge success of “Wannabe,” the girls returned with another catchy pop anthem, blending dance-pop with R&B influences and showcasing a slightly different side of their sound.

Written by the Spice Girls alongside Eliot Kennedy, with Jonathan Buck later receiving a songwriting credit, the track was produced by the talented production duo Absolute. One of its most distinctive features is the harmonica solo performed by Judd Lander, adding a memorable touch to the song’s upbeat production.

Lyrically, “Say You’ll Be There” explores friendship, trust and the importance of being there for one another, even when romance gets complicated. Staying true to the group’s independent spirit, the song puts the girls’ perspective first and reinforces the bond between the five Spice Girls.

The single became another major international hit, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. In the United States, it made an impressive debut at number five, setting a record at the time for the highest chart entry by a British act. The song also achieved strong chart success around the world and received multiple music certifications.

The accompanying music video took a completely different approach to the girls’ debut. Inspired by films such as Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Pulp Fiction, it transformed Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham into futuristic, martial-arts-inspired heroines on a mission to capture a man. With its desert setting, high-tech gadgets and unforgettable looks, the video became another iconic moment in Spice Girls history.

Following “Wannabe” was never going to be an easy task, but “Say You’ll Be There” proved that the Spice Girls were far more than a one-hit wonder. With its infectious chorus, distinctive video and unmistakable Girl Power attitude, the single helped cement their place at the heart of ’90s pop culture.

Lyrics

Say you’ll be there (Lyrics):

Oh, say you’ll be there
I’m, giving you everything
All that joy can bring, this I swear

Last time, that we had this conversation
I decided we should be friends, hey
But now, we’re going ’round in circles
Tell me will this Deja vu never end, oh
Now you tell me that you’ve fallen in love
Well I never ever thought that would be, eh
This time, you gotta take it easy
Throwing far too much emotions at me
