Too Much
Released on 8 December 1997, “Too Much” was the second single from the Spice Girls’ second studio album, Spiceworld. Written by Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham alongside production duo Absolute, the song explores a more romantic and reflective side of the group’s pop sound, blending smooth R&B influences with dreamy melodies and heartfelt harmonies.
Lyrically, “Too Much” explores the intensity of love, desire and the feeling of wanting more from a relationship. Its softer, more soulful sound offered a contrast to the high-energy party anthem “Spice Up Your Life,” showing the girls’ versatility while maintaining their unmistakable pop appeal.
The music video, directed by Howard Greenhalgh, brings each Spice Girl’s individual fantasy to life. Inspired by different film genres, Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham each appear in their own cinematic setting, giving the video five distinctive looks and moods.
“Too Much” became another major milestone for the Spice Girls, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. It was their sixth consecutive UK number-one single and their second consecutive Christmas number one, making them the first act in UK chart history to have their first six singles reach the top spot. Across the Atlantic, the song peaked at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming their fourth and final US top-ten hit.
With its romantic atmosphere, memorable chorus and cinematic video, “Too Much” remains one of the standout tracks from the Spiceworld era — proof that the Spice Girls could deliver heartfelt ballads just as effortlessly as they could fill a dance floor.
