Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)
Released on 5 November 2007, “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” marked a very special moment in Spice Girls history: the return of all five original members for the first time on a commercial single since Geri Halliwell’s departure in 1998. Written by Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham alongside Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, the song was the only single released from their Greatest Hits album.
A heartfelt, midtempo pop ballad, “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” celebrates the bond between the five girls and the friendship that carried them through years of fame, success and change. Its lyrics reflect on their shared journey and the enduring connection between them, delivering a message that goes beyond the spotlight: true friendship can survive even when life takes everyone in different directions.
The accompanying music video, directed by Anthony Mandler, was filmed at Pinewood Studios in England. Set in an elegant room with plum-coloured walls and antique furniture, it features the girls dressed in glamorous gowns designed by Roberto Cavalli, bringing a sophisticated and timeless look to their reunion.
The single was released in support of BBC Children in Need, becoming the charity’s official single for 2007. The girls performed it at Children in Need and the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show before including it in their Return of the Spice Girls reunion tour. Although it peaked at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, it reached number three on the UK Physical Singles Chart and achieved top-five success in Italy, Spain and Sweden.
While “Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)” was their first single to miss the UK top ten, its importance goes far beyond chart positions. It brought the original five Spice Girls together again and celebrated the friendship at the heart of their story.
