The story

Goodbye

Released on 24 November 1998, “Goodbye” marked an emotional turning point in Spice Girls history. Written by Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham alongside Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, this heartfelt pop ballad became the group’s first single released after Geri Halliwell’s departure earlier that year.

With its gentle melodies, beautiful harmonies and deeply personal lyrics, “Goodbye” was widely interpreted as a farewell to Geri, reflecting the love and friendship shared by the five girls. Although its emotional message led many fans to wonder whether it signalled the end of the Spice Girls altogether, the remaining members made it clear that their journey together was far from over.

The music video was filmed at the magnificent Mentmore Towers in England, where Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham perform in an elegant, wintry castle setting. Both Melanie B and Victoria Beckham were pregnant during filming, adding another special detail to this memorable chapter in the group’s history.

“Goodbye” became a huge commercial success, debuting at number one on the UK Singles Chart. It gave the Spice Girls their third consecutive Christmas number-one single, making them the first act since the Beatles in 1965 to achieve this remarkable feat. The song also topped the charts in several other countries, including Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and Italy, and reached number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The song continued to hold a special place in the group’s live performances, returning during their reunion tours in 2007–2008 and 2019. More than just a chart-topping ballad, “Goodbye” remains a touching tribute to friendship, change and the memories that stay with us — a song that reminds every JLover of the power of saying goodbye without ever forgetting the love that came before.

Lyrics

No, no, no, no

Listen little child.
There will come a day,
When you will be able,
Able to say.
Nevermind the pain,
Or the aggravation.
She knows there’s a better way,
for you and me to be.

Look for the rainbow in every storm.
Fly like an angel,
heaven sent to me.
