Spice Up Your Life
Released in October 1997, “Spice Up Your Life” was the lead single from the Spice Girls’ second studio album, Spiceworld. Written by Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham alongside Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, the track brought a fresh burst of energy to the group’s signature pop sound, blending dance-pop with vibrant Latin influences, including salsa and samba rhythms.
Inspired by the girls’ ambition to create a song for the whole world, “Spice Up Your Life” is all about celebrating life, embracing different cultures and getting everyone on their feet. With its infectious chorus and feel-good message, the song quickly became a global party anthem that perfectly captured the unstoppable spirit of the Spice Girls.
The accompanying music video, directed by Marcus Nispel, transported the girls into a futuristic, dystopian city inspired by the 1982 science-fiction film Blade Runner. In this dark, high-tech world, the Spice Girls take control of society, delivering an unforgettable visual that contrasted with the song’s colourful, upbeat energy.
“Spice Up Your Life” debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the group’s fifth consecutive UK number-one single. It achieved strong success across Europe and Oceania, earned double-platinum certification in the UK and reached number 18 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Over the years, the song has remained a fan favourite, featuring regularly in the group’s live performances, including their spectacular appearance at the London 2012 Olympic Games closing ceremony. Its enduring pop-culture presence continued with appearances in the 2023 film Barbie and Doctor Who: The Giggle.
With its unforgettable “la la la” chorus, international spirit and pure Girl Power energy, “Spice Up Your Life” remains one of the Spice Girls’ most iconic anthems — because when the girls say spice up your life, you simply have to dance!
