Holler
Released on 23 October 2000 as a double A-side single with “Let Love Lead the Way,” “Holler” marked a bold new chapter for the Spice Girls and their third studio album, Forever. Written by the five girls alongside Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, LaShawn Daniels and Fred Jerkins III, the track embraced a sleek R&B and dance sound, showcasing a more mature and confident side of Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham.
Moving away from the bubblegum pop that defined their early years, “Holler” features smooth production, infectious beats and sultry vocals. Its lyrics see the girls confidently expressing their desire and inviting someone to make their feelings known, giving the song a playful, flirtatious energy that set it apart from their earlier hits.
Directed by Jake Nava, the futuristic music video sees each Spice Girl representing one of the four classical elements: earth, air, fire and water. The girls also come together inside a striking glass pyramid, creating a dramatic visual that perfectly complements the song’s polished, contemporary sound.
“Holler” became another major chart success, debuting at number one on the UK Singles Chart and becoming the Spice Girls’ ninth UK number-one single. This achievement helped establish them as the girl group with the most UK number-one singles at the time. The track also reached the top ten in several other countries, including Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland and Spain.
The girls promoted “Holler” with performances on British television and at the 2000 MTV Europe Music Awards in Stockholm. It later returned to their live setlists during the 2007–2008 reunion tour and the 2019 Spice World tour.
With its confident attitude, smooth R&B groove and striking visuals, “Holler” showed that the Spice Girls could evolve with the times while keeping their unmistakable spirit alive. It remains a standout track from the Forever era and a favourite for fans who love the girls’ more mature sound.
