Released on 26 June 1996, “Wannabe” was the song that introduced the Spice Girls to the world and kick-started one of the biggest pop phenomena of the ’90s! Written by the five girls alongside songwriters Matt Rowe and Richard “Biff” Stannard, the infectious dance-pop anthem became the lead single from their debut album, Spice.
With its unforgettable “zig-a-zig-ah” hook, playful lyrics and message of friendship before romance, “Wannabe” captured everything the Spice Girls stood for: confidence, individuality and, of course, Girl Power! The song quickly became their signature anthem and helped turn Melanie B, Melanie C, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham into international superstars.
The girls’ fun-filled music video, directed by Johan Camitz, first caught viewers’ attention on British music television, sparking growing interest in the group. With radio airplay, television appearances, interviews and magazine shoots following soon after, the excitement surrounding the Spice Girls continued to grow. The single was released in Japan in June 1996, followed by the UK release in July, ahead of the arrival of their debut album. In January 1997, “Wannabe” made its way to American radio, helping spread Spice Mania across the Atlantic.
More than just a debut single, “Wannabe” became a defining moment in pop history. It introduced the world to five very different personalities united by friendship, fun and an empowering message that continues to resonate with fans today. If there’s one song that will forever make us shout “Girl Power!”, it’s “Wannabe”!
